According to a report posted by Secure Data Recovery, hard disk drives (HDDs) have an average lifespan of just under three years, with a sample size of over 2,000 hard drives covering six manufacturers. The report tested traditional platter-based HDDs from Western Digital, Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, and Maxtor.

Of the brands tested, Maxtor and Toshiba were found to offer the most "power-on" hours before failing, while Hitachi and Samsung had the worst results. Western Digital and Seagate were the largest manufacturers in the sample, accounting for around 75% of the HDDs studied. Western Digital performed slightly better than Seagate, with a lifespan of 25,676 hours versus Seagate's 23,298 hours, with fewer bad sectors.

The study also found that the most resilient and durable hard drives were made before 2015, regardless of brand. This is likely due to the increased complexity and storage capacity of newer hard drives, which can cause more components to be stressed.

These findings are important for individuals and organizations that rely on HDDs for data storage. It is recommended to consider the brand and age of the hard drive when purchasing or maintaining data storage systems to ensure reliability and prevent data loss.
